Local senior care business hopes to hire 100 workers this year

 

The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Owensboro, Henderson and much of western Kentucky today announced it expects to add 100 CAREGivers to its existing staff in 2013.

The local company’s anticipated growth is a key indicator of the increasing demand for home care professionals and the strength of the industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of personal care aides is expected to grow by 70 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Unemployment dips slightly in Webster, Union Counties

Webster County's unemployment rate fell from 7.9% to 7.3% between January and February according to data released by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training.

In all, 456 Webster County residents were without a job in Febraury.  

In Union County, unemployment dipped from 7.4% to 7.2%.  A year ago, the county's unemployment rate was 8%.

Unemployment rates fell in 91 Kentucky counties between February 2012 and February 2013, while 26 county rates increased and three stayed the same.

Union County still has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Kentucky but more people were out of work in January than the month before according to data from the Office of Employment and Training.

Union County’s rate jumped from 6.5% in December to 7.3% in January-- still lower than the 8.1% of residents who didn’t have a job in January of 2012.

In Webster County, unemployment has stayed basically the same at between 7 and 8 percent over the last year.

According to an August NASS report, Kentucky corn production is predicted to be the lowest since 1983 at 96.9 million bushels, down 46 percent from the previous crop. While acreage is up, expected yields are down significantly from the previous year. Yield was estimated at 65 bushels per acre, down 74 bushels from the 2011 level. Harvest is about 40 percent complete state wide.

Bob White, who farms with his family in Union Co., has harvested half of their corn crop and reports yields are the worst he has seen since he began farming in 1974.

Union County has received the Certified Work Ready Community In Progress designation.  The certification program from the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (KWIB) and the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet assures employers that a local workforce has the talent and skills necessary to staff existing jobs and to master the innovative technologies new jobs will require.

GRADD loans will help fund Union Co. Livestock's expansion

Green River Area Development District (GRADD) approved two low-interest Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) business loans, totaling $400,000, for Union County Livestock, Inc. at this month’s GRADD Board of Directors meeting.

The loans are part of a $3.3 million expansion that is projected to create over 60 full-time jobs at the Uniontown agricultural firm.

The RLF funds will enable Union County Livestock (and its marketing division Mid-South Sales) to purchase equipment and utilize working capital to expand product lines to include chicken salad, ham salad, tuna salad, pimento cheese, and barbecue ribs, as well as new party trays.

Sturgis, Providence Old National Bank branches sold to Planters Bank

Old National Bank has sold several of its branches in Kentucky to Planters Bank.

Among the locations that are part of the sale are the company’s locations on Adams Street in Sturgis and on Westerfield Drive in Providence.  The sale of the Sturgis branch also includes a separate drive-thru location.

ONB has also sold its locations in Dawson Springs and Sebree.

Old National Bank, Old National Bancorp's banking subsidiary, announced today plans to sell or consolidate 27 banking centers in all as part of what it called "ongoing efficiency and service delivery improvements".
