Know someone with Alzheimer's?  Free training may help

 

The Green River Area Development District will host two free trainings by the Alzheimer’s Association on Thursday, May 2nd, at the GRADD Office (300 GRADD Way, Owensboro).

The first, “Communicating and Relating,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon; and the second, “Activities and Safety at Home,” will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The “Communicating and Relating” workshop will detail the behavioral changes experienced by individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and it will provide caregivers with practical suggestions to deal with these changes.

Local mammogram  program recieves $21,468 from Komen for the Cure

The Evansville Tri-State Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded nineteen grants today totaling $516,810.  Among the recipients was Methodist Hospital's “Mammograms for Western Kentucky” program which will provide screening and diagnostic services to women who reside in Henderson, Union and Webster Counties.  Their grant totalled $21,468.

A push across the country for parents to make sure their babies have the recommended immunizations.  Correct vaccinations for children by age two can aid in protection from 14 serious diseases.  Officials say 2-3 million deaths occur each year from vaccine preventable diseases, half of those deaths are children under three years old.

Pediatricians stress correct timing of immunizations is also critical to their effectiveness.

Local senior care business hopes to hire 100 workers this year

 

The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Owensboro, Henderson and much of western Kentucky today announced it expects to add 100 CAREGivers to its existing staff in 2013.

The local company’s anticipated growth is a key indicator of the increasing demand for home care professionals and the strength of the industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of personal care aides is expected to grow by 70 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Union, Webster Counties scores on health outcomes

Webster County ranks 51st and Union County 74th in Kentucky with regard to health outcomes, according to the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's annual report.  The fourth annual County Health Rankings, released this week, rank overall health for every county in all 50 states by using a standard formula to measure how healthy people are and how long they live.

Kentucky teams up with HumanaVitality  to lower the cost of healthier foods

Kentucky Employees' Health Plan's LivingWell program announced today its participation in Vitality HealthyFood, making health plan members who shop at Walmart eligible for five percent savings on healthier foods.

The foods that qualify for Walmart's Great For You icon, include fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy.

Vitality HealthyFood, a first-of-its-kind effort to help consumers save money on more-nutritious foods and ultimately, live longer, healthier lives, was launched four months ago by HumanaVitality and Walmart. The program offers savings on items that qualify for Walmart's Great For You icon, which was developed in consultation with food and nutrition experts in the public and private sector, as well as leading health organizations.
