2013 Free fishing weekend in Kentucky

 

June 1 and 2 will be Free Fishing Weekend in Kentucky.

State residents and nonresidents can fish any allowable inland water in the Bluegrass State that weekend without a fishing license.

Adults can fish free all weekend, and kids under 16 do not need a license to fish in Kentucky. 

Season dates, limits and all other fishing regulations must be followed during Free Fishing Weekend.

Needy students to benefit from Union Co. golf scramble; still time to enter

There's still time to enter United Community Bank’s 10th Annual Golf Scramble.  Proceeds will benefit Union County Happy Pack which provides weekend food for needy students. 

Tee it up at the Breckinridge Golf Course on May 24. There's a $50 entry fee.

The tournament had originally been scheduled for May 10 but has been postponed because of the likelihood of rain.

Zumba for a Cure at UCHS Saturday

Zumba for a Cure at UCHS Saturday

 

The Union County Schools Relay for Life team is holding Zumba for a Cure on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the UCHS football field.

For $20, participants get a t-shirt and an hour and a half of Zumba with instructor Trecy Chaykowsky.  All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

10th annual Masters Challenge kicks off soon

10th annual Masters Challenge kicks off soon

 

The 2013 Masters Athletic Challenge will be held May 16 - June 8, and will feature bowling, swimming, tennis, golf, cycling, and track and field.

Formerly known as the Green River Regional Senior Games, this annual event promotes physical fitness and healthy competition among area residents age 50+.

The games kick off in mid-May, with bowling at Diamond Lanes South in Owensboro (Thursday, May 16) and swimming at Owensboro Health’s HealthPark (Saturday, May 18).

Area athletes to compete in Special Olympics spring games

Area athletes to compete in Special Olympics spring games

 

The Special Olympics Kentucky Area 2 Spring Games will be held Saturday, April 27, at Apollo High School in Owensboro. The Area 2 meet includes more than 150 athletes from Daviess, Grayson, Henderson, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Area Spring Games include both powerlifting and track and field. Powerlifting will get underway at 9:30 a.m. in the Apollo gym. The event’s official Opening Ceremonies, including the parade of athletes, will take place at 12:30 p.m. on the track. And the track and field competition begins at 1:15 p.m.

Union County baseball team at Derby City Classic

The Union County Braves baseball team is in Louisville this week, competing in the Derby City Classic.

Union County will face Oldham County, North Oldham and South Oldham Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week in Louisville.

Pitching has been an issue so far this year, with Brave hurlers giving up nin runs or more in five of the seven games they've played.  Union County is 2-5 following losses to Scott County and Castle on Saturday.
